Nicholas F.B. Smyth

Nicholas Smyth was hired by then-Attorney General Josh Shapiro in 2017 to launch a Consumer Financial Protection Unit. He manages investigations and litigation of a dozen attorneys involving student lending, mortgages, auto finance, high-cost lending, debt collection, credit reporting, debt settlement, and scams. Since 2017, his team has obtained over $360 million in redress for consumers. His cases include, among others, Mariner Finance, Progressive Leasing, Trident Mortgage, Navient (formerly Sallie Mae), Citibank, Think Finance, Equifax and Wells Fargo.

Prior to joining the OAG, Nick spent four years as an Enforcement Attorney at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. He also worked at Reed Smith LLP and in house at an auto finance company. He began his career at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, where he assisted in drafting and revising the Consumer Financial Protection Act of 2010.

A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, he was born in Ireland and resides in Pittsburgh.
